Justin (Woody) Montcrieff Scott

February 24, 1972 - August 21, 2023

Tribute

Woody, 51, passed away surrounded by friends and family on August 21 2023 at Lady Minto Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He received wonderful care and kindness from the staff during his time in hospital.

Born in North Vancouver to Jim and Wendy Scott, Woody moved to Salt Spring in 1974 with his family. They had purchased 80 acres of second-growth forest from Macmillan Blowdell and spent the next 15 years turning it into a farm. This was always home to Woody and helped shape him into the lover of all things that make up a rural lifestyle.

Woody was a kind and gentle soul with a curious mind and a good sense of humour. He had a knowledge of many subjects ranging from cooking to farming to logging to poetry and more.

Woody played soccer through his youth and early adulthood forging bonds and friendships that would continue for his entire life. His work life began at a young age when he was hired on by his soccer coach Malcom Legg to work in landscaping. This inspired Woody to open Double Diamond Property Maintenance which he ran for many years. This van was a familiar site and turned up in many island places. Woody spent time as a commercial fisherman with two island fishermen and he loved his time on the water as much as his time in port.

At some point along his travels, he met his best friend Ian Haze who ran Golden Ash Tree Care and it is here that his love of logging and tree work was born. Ian and Woody had many an adventure together both at work and after hours. He spent almost a decade as the farm hand at Ken Byron’s (senior) farm, where he really honed his skills and became a master of growing food and all things farm-related.

Never one to be held back from chasing his dreams, Woody decided to become a certified B.C. Faller. He accomplished this and worked as a helli-logger until an injury caused him to change careers again. At this point he decided to go to Alberta and study HVAC. Ultimately this wasn’t the right fit and he landed at Mineral Springs Resort as the manager in 2016 which allowed him to use all of the skills and connections he forged over his lifetime as an Islander. It is here that he met his dear friend Melissa. They worked as a team. Melissa cared for him throughout his illness and was a tireless advocate and most trusted and loyal confidant, helping with everything from resort business to doctor’s appointments, laundry and meals.

Woody was pre-deceased by his father Jim and is survived by his mother Wendy, brothers Corbin (Jenn) and Morgain (Ramona) and sister Alanna. Mary Lou who knew and loved him his entire life, nieces Kyra and Helena and Nephew Liam, Aunt Karen, family Greg (Kyla), Brandon and Tanner.

Woody you are one of a kind! You always listened and responded with kind and well thought out advice. You gave people the benefit of the doubt, never judged or looked down upon anyone and would always put others before yourself. You will be missed deeply but never forgotten . Rest in peace.

To Woody’s Family ….. we ( Peter , Connie and Jeremy ) would like to extent our sincerest condolences to you all on the passing of Woody !
We got to know Woody on Salt Spring Island when we and he was involved in the setting up of the resort on Salt Spring Island in 2016 . We became very good friends , he was always so positive and a happy person . We work so well together during very difficult times with the resort as well taking care of several houses in the area . Truly he was a true and real friend and when needed he was there for you . We left after two years and where transferred by this organization to Toronto , where just stayed 1 year , then we went on to Germany and from there to China again . We always stayed in contact with him via WeChat and he did mention that he had cancer and was fighting it. It has been a while since we heart last from him , about July , but somehow we never where told that he passed away in September he is now in a better world and he R.I.P , he will be dearly missed and we are in a great shock about this ! Found out through google as wanted to see if I can find something on him and there it was ! Please kindly reply to my mail and thanks , we loved him so much !
