William Cecil Hume
September 12, 1931 - April 12, 2023
Tribute
With great love, we announce the peaceful passing of William C. Hume.
Born in Calgary on September 12, 1931, Bill was the first of three children to William and Dorothy Hume. Living in Cranbrook, BC, he spent his childhood developing a love for the mountains, nature and a strong work ethic. At seventeen he moved to the city and began working with NCR, the beginning of a long, successful career which included roles at Philips Electronics and Moore Corp as a salesman and National Sales Manager. His work took him all over Western Canada including Edmonton where he would meet Elaine, his wife of 53 years. They settled in Toronto where Bill shared his zest for life with family and friends through adventures to Lake Huron, the Magnetewan river and sailing on Lake Ontario. An avid sportsman, he coached youth hockey and was an active member of the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club, serving on the board, becoming an elite curler, and coaching newcomers to the sport. At home, he loved his family, neighbours, gardening, birdwatching, and attending church regularly.
Bill will be remembered for his radiant smile, sense of humour, photography, and the way he included everyone and made them feel at home. He spent his final six months back in his home province of beautiful British Columbia. He is survived by his wife Elaine, children Kelly (Tim), Carol, Billy (Clarissa) and Michael, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and sister Lynne (Keith). The family will be forever grateful to Bill’s dedicated caregiving team in Toronto and at Heritage Place on Salt Spring Island.

Elaine,
I was very sorry to see Bill’s death notice in the Star over the weekend. I much enjoyed meeting him on the two occasions. Fifty-three years is amazing, you had a great life together. All good things.

From: Michael Cernik
Relation: Bill taught me how to curl at the Cricket Club
Bill was one of the main reasons I got into curling as much as I did. Bill was the coach of the junior program that I was part of then decided to ruffle feathers by insisting that at 16 I started curling with the adults and never looked back. I still have many of the photos Bill took in those early years of my curling career and am so thankful that it wasn’t a digital camera as some of them weren’t really fit for printing.

Dear Elaine and Family
Bill was such a great friend to myself, Tony and our family. He brought Tony from Montreal to Toronto to work for him at Philips. Once we got here he took us under his wing and we became family. Michael and Tara have such fond memories of spending time with Bill. Michael still talks about the fishing expeditions he took him on. The Manni family will miss him greatly, however all the wonderful photos he took will put smiles on our faces.

From: J. E. Michael Rolph
Relation: Friend and hockey supporter.
Michael, Isabelle & Jamie Rolph send our sincerest sympathies to Elaine, Billy & Mike on learning of the passing of Bill. I first met the family through York Mills hockey in the mid 80’s and then at UCC, where the boys played for the Blues. He was a true gentleman who, I know will be missed by all of us who knew him.
