William Cecil Hume

September 12, 1931 - April 12, 2023

Tribute

With great love, we announce the peaceful passing of William C. Hume.

Born in Calgary on September 12, 1931, Bill was the first of three children to William and Dorothy Hume. Living in Cranbrook, BC, he spent his childhood developing a love for the mountains, nature and a strong work ethic. At seventeen he moved to the city and began working with NCR, the beginning of a long, successful career which included roles at Philips Electronics and Moore Corp as a salesman and National Sales Manager. His work took him all over Western Canada including Edmonton where he would meet Elaine, his wife of 53 years. They settled in Toronto where Bill shared his zest for life with family and friends through adventures to Lake Huron, the Magnetewan river and sailing on Lake Ontario. An avid sportsman, he coached youth hockey and was an active member of the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club, serving on the board, becoming an elite curler, and coaching newcomers to the sport. At home, he loved his family, neighbours, gardening, birdwatching, and attending church regularly.

Bill will be remembered for his radiant smile, sense of humour, photography, and the way he included everyone and made them feel at home. He spent his final six months back in his home province of beautiful British Columbia. He is survived by his wife Elaine, children Kelly (Tim), Carol, Billy (Clarissa) and Michael, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and sister Lynne (Keith). The family will be forever grateful to Bill’s dedicated caregiving team in Toronto and at Heritage Place on Salt Spring Island.

I share a tear with your family. It was a pleasure to know Bill over the decades. He was always smiling. My fondest memory is an early one when he took me to lunch at The Cricket. On the way out he wrapped a dessert in a napkin – for my staff member Ieva. Always a friendly person to everyone.

From: Dean Corrigan

Dear Elaine

We will miss Bill for his great personality and camaraderie. You were great friends with my parents and he helped me get my first job at Philips Electronics driving the Winnebago with huge “desktop” computers! I am sure a lot of his curling friends from the Cricket club will miss him as well. Condolences at this time to you and the kids.

From: Henry Fischler
Relation: He was my boss.

I worked with Bill many years ago at Philips. He was a mentor and I think he felt pride in what we accomplished at Filbitron. He was a great guy and a pleasure to work for.
You might remember teaching my wife skating at FH arena.
Warm regards to you and your family.

From: Bea D'Andrade nee Lewis
Relation: He was my first boss.

Bill Hume was my first boss at Philips Data Systems. He hired me as his secretary in 1976. He was a kind. warm hearted gentleman who saw potential in me that I never knew existed. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity he gave me to succeed in life. I now have a special angel watching over me.

From: Rod Perry
Relation: A great friend of my parents, Bill and Helen Perry

Bill Hume was a great friend of my father, Bill Perry, and my mother Helen. Arguably Bill’s actions helped my father start the company I own today Sensyst. My dad was convinced by Bill to leave NCR to join Bill at Philips. For whatever reason, Philips was not the right fit for my dad and he left Philips and ultimately he started Sensyst. My mother and father always spoke highly of Bill and throughly enjoyed seeing him and their longtime friendship. Elaine and family, our sincere condolences, your Bill was a good man.

From: Gloria Smith
Relation: Through business at first that then became a friendship.

My friend and I got to know Bill through work when he was a supplier. We were lucky to share many lunches, laughs and posing for our photo to commemorate each get together. We were fortunate to be invited for Christmas lunch at the Curling Club and how we all enjoyed the rum balls. Bill was a warm, giving friend that we always looked forward to spending time with. My heart goes out to hardworking Elaine and their family that he was so proud of. He will be incredibly missed.
