Obituary

Sylvia Shannon Senensky
August 4, 1944 – December 15, 2020

With great sadness the family of Sylvia Senensky announces her passing on December 15, 2020, peacefully, at the age of 76.

Sylvia was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was passionate about travel, art, and archetypal mythology.

She spent time living in Israel, Zurich, Guelph, and Toronto before moving to Salt Spring Island with her late husband, Roger Middleton. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Africa and New Zealand.

Sylvia had a thriving career as a Jungian analyst and gave many lectures and workshops exploring the dark feminine. In 2003 she published Healing and Empowering the Feminine: A Labyrinth Journey.

Sylvia is survived by her sister, Benita, stepdaughter, Tara (Marek) and grandchildren, Avery and Tyler.

Special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff of Lady Minto Hospital Extended Care.

A celebration of life will occur at a future date.

From: Marilyn Melville
Relation: She was a friend

Sylvia and I met over 55 years ago when we both studied Occupational Therapy at the Uviversity of Manitoba. We also worked together on the psychiatric unit of the Winnipeg General Hospital. Sylvia went off to Israel to work and I lost touch with her. Then, when travelling through Europe and Great Britain, I went to the Britis Museum and who should I meet but Sylvia!
Sylvia persuaded me to join Therafields. She invited me to join a Medicine Wheel that she and Robin Van Doren were running. She generously allowed me to keep Muffin, her beloved shin Tsu Bijon dog, while she taught workshops on the labyrinth. I loved her and miss her.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Tara Wojtaszek, her step daughter, for whom she cared greatly, and her sister Benita Moore. Also, deep gratitude to Heather Hanson and Prem Pillay, for their frequent, caring visits to Sylvia.

Sylvia changed my life. I too was one of the Women of the Wheel. I met Sylvia in a small town Ontario community hall where she taught a circle of 25 women the profound dance of the Labyrinth. Sylvia became my mentor and some time later she invited me to join The Wheel which became a focus of my life for the next 16 years. And while the group has dispersed, the echoes of it are always with me. My husband and I were able to visit Sylvia and Roger on Salt Spring just before she went into care. The memories of this incredible woman are vivid with her encouragement and laughter. I will always hold her in my heart.

From: Valda Manninen
Relation: She was my teacher and friend.

I met Sylvia in Guelph and was a member of her Women’s Dream Group for several years. She invited me to join her first Medicine Wheel group with Robin VanDoren and I remained devoted to her until she moved to Salt Spring Island. The Medicine Wheel had a profound influence on my life and I spent 16 years directly connected to the Wheel and continue today to practice its teachings. I, too, loved Sylvia and will never forget her devotion to my own and many other women’s inner lives. Valda Manninen
