Early years: Peter was born and raised in Alert Bay. While his older siblings Alfred, Joyce, Beatrice, Winnie went to St. Mary’s Residential School, Peter attended the day school and regular high school. As a small child he was given chores like searching for driftwood for the stove.
Education: Throughout his life like all his siblings Peter received the message from his father Chief Bill Scow that education was the way we were going to be able to stand strong as a people to help ourselves to be self-reliant and sustainable. Peter went to Courtney for grade 13, then spent a year at University of British Columbia, before focusing on a Food Technology Degree at British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1968.
He passed the message on about the value of education to his children Beverly and Kevin who both attended the University of British Columbia as well. He made sure to attend the graduations of all his grandchildren
on about the value of education to his children Beverly and Kevin who both attended the University of British Columbia as well. He made sure to attend the graduations of all his grandchildren to support them in their educational milestones, even when it meant travelling all the way to Oneida/Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Fishing: Fishing is our lifeway on the west coast. Every household in Alert Bay is affected by the fishing seasons. He remembers as boys making slipknot hooks out of grass to catch small fish. One time they rigged an old screen door to catch some fish, that they then put on the road. “Boy did we get xxxx for that one”. Peter was a member of a Seine boat crew as young as 13 and 15. He owned a gillnet boat at age 16. For 3 seasons he fished at night while going to high school during the day. He has always enjoyed being by the water and talking to any fisherman on shores where ever he is at.
Soccer: Peter loved soccer. It was a big part of his life. At age 10 he was smaller than his peers but wanted to join the soccer team. He heard some boys were running together at 6:00 am, so he started running at 6:00 am and he practiced his soccer kick to the center field. He improved and was able to play on the team. This determination to do his best and push himself to the limits led to a culminating moment where he was named the All Star Champion of a 15 team tournament of Senior Soccer on the coast. He loved soccer and he loved running.
Running: Running was joy in Peter’s youth. The last 200 yard sprint of a run “was exhilarating”. After raising his family and working so hard on many projects, his health had declined. He made a choice to regain his health. A doctor told him he could not be running, but he found a way. He dedicated himself to strengthening his core with floor calisthenics and loosing weight first, then walking and then running again.
He became a volunteer Sun Run running coach with the distinguishment of longest serving volunteer at 20 years and being the oldest one as well. He ran about 12 – 15 of the Sun Runs through the years, and several full marathons as well. He made a point to join Beverly’s family in Green Bay for a similar event called the Bellin Run and also the Fox Valley Marathon for his grandchildren to witness. As he passed the finish line he hollered at his daughter Beverly, “Hey do you have some extra time?” She said, “sure what for?”. He said, “I am going to do this again!”. He got laughter from all those in earshot.
Family: Peter married Patricia Pinder 1964 and they raised their two children, Beverly Scow and Kevin Scow in Port Edward and North Delta. His Grandchildren are Yonakwala Scow, Synala Smith, Kwnwahta Smith, and Qualayou Smith of Oneida/Green Bay Wisconsin, and Jacob Scow in Sechelt, BC. His Great Grandchildren are Dalala Scow (12) and Jamil “Teka” Roberts Jr. (9) of Oneida/Green Bay Wisconsin. Peter loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. There are so many photos of him holding and playing with the babies or doing floor exercises and running with them.
Coaching: Peter was called upon to coach in Port Edward a soccer team for the 12 year old boys, none of whom had played soccer before. He practiced with them every night after work, worked to get their field leveled, and saw each boys strengths and how they can work together as a team. Between 2-3 cars to transport the team to games they improved each game to the point that they won the season ending tournament.
He coached both his children’s soccer and softball teams for many years in North Delta. He supported their interests in swimming, ice skating, girl guides, boy scouts, field hockey and skiing. One winter they all got skis for Christmas and lessons at Grouse Mountain. Then during winter break from school go to a new skiing location in BC interior for years.
Travel was important to Peter and he took his family on road trips down the California Coast to Mexico, one summer they drove across Canada to the eastern most tip of Newfoundland then back through the northern USA states. He took Beverly and Kevin to Europe for a 8 country road trip to all the “sites”. He considered traveling a valuable education experience.
Peter met his beloved partner, Adele Weir, in 1988, and together they embarked on countless adventures. From exploring the fishing villages along the west coast on a BC Packers Seine boat to driving the stunning landscapes of the Alaska Highway, traveling to the sun-soaked shores of Hawaii, and marveling at the wonders of the Panama Canal, they also ventured to the vibrant landscapes of India and the charming streets of Portugal. Their journey together was filled with joy and discovery. After retiring, they found their perfect sanctuary on Salt Spring Island, where they transformed a house into a home and nurtured a thriving garden. At 80 years old he put a new steel roof on that home with determination and the assistance of nephew Lenard Scow. Even at 85, Peter was still chopping wood like a pro, ensuring their cozy wood stove was always well-stocked.
Peter had a great love for Adele. They appreciated each others talents, saying they belonged to a ‘mutual admiration society’. He enjoyed Adele’s children, Jason and Jana. He liked to tell us, with a twinkle in his eye, that when Adele said “Peter, I have been thinking” he was about to embark on a new project in the house or garden.
Career Accomplishments: Peter Scow worked for 10 years as Regional Production Quality Control Supervisor for BC Packers 1969-1978. He took Umbo’s words to heart “Where ever you are and whatever you are doing, learn all you can. It will serve you well”
Peter was Seafood Consultant for 15 years supporting several tribes with developing their seafood businesses and several research studies for Native Brotherhood of British Columbia. He was very proud of a major study he did which documented the disparity and systemic decline in Indian fishing licenses with recommendations to increase Indian participation in the fisheries economy.
Peter worked 10 years at Indian and Northern Affairs Canada primarily supporting housing development on reservations in British Columbia where he had a good impact supporting self-reliance and self-sufficiency in communities. Peter enjoyed his time at Indian Affairs and made many long lasting friendships among colleagues.
They shared so many jokes, they decided to just number them. Over the cubical one of them would say “Hey Gord! Joke number 12!” Then they all would laugh heartily.
Peter enjoyed Men’s Coffee groups in Oneida and Salt Spring Island weekly. From 4 to 14 men would gather to share stories and jokes. He formed dear friendships wherever he went.
