Tribute
(Marion) Rose Fewings May 27, 1923 to July 17, 2025
A life well lived.
Born in 1923 to Rae and Lena Armstrong, Rose grew up on the family farm near Cardale, MB. Her first job was teaching at Beverley, a one-room school in the southwest corner of Manitoba. There in 1942, she met and married the handsome bachelor, Raymond Fewings. Together, through hard work, they established a successful farm just south of Tilston, MB. Once their children were in school Rose began teaching again in near-by Pierson. In 1969, after turning the farm over to their son, they moved to Melita, MB where Rose became the town’s librarian. Like many women of her generation, she was strong, capable and hard working.
In 1980 Ray and Rose decided to follow their son Dale to Salt Spring Island. They embraced island life and spend many happy years turning their yard into a gardener’s paradise (Ray grew the food and Rose grew the flowers) as well as hiking and square dancing. Rose also joined the horticultural society, sang in several choirs and volunteered for many years at Lady Minto Thrift Store.
In 2010 Dale passed away. His daughter Dana and her partner Katherine moved back to SSI to care for Rose. They got to know Rose for the woman she was, beyond being a grandmother, and the time spent with her was something they wouldn’t trade for anything. Rose spent her last few years at Greenwoods Eldercare Society, living with dementia. She remained the most gracious and observant woman right up until the last day. The staff at Greenwoods were kind and loving and treated Rose like family, and her family knew that she was safe there.
Rose was predeceased by Raymond and their three sons, David, Dale, and Brian. She is survived by her daughter Robin Fewings (John Sanders); David’s children Melanie Fewings (Kevin Brown and daughter Lily), and Natalie Fewings; Dale’s children Erin Fewings (Shannon and children Emma (Marie Meyer), Sarah (Chayton Skye), and Marcus), Dana Fewings (Katherine Greene), and step grandchildren Carly Clark (Sam Rech and son Elliott) and Abey Scaglione (Matt and sons Vaughn and Ashton). Rose is also survived by her youngest sister Reggie (Ed) Wingerter.
Rose lived a long, fulfilling life and was much loved by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
Her family will celebrate her life privately.
