Margie Anne Korrison (Escher)

December 26, 1944 - June 1, 2023

Tribute

Margie Korrison – born Margaret Anne Escher in San Francisco on December 26, 1944 – passed away June 1, 2023, at home with family by her side.

Margie leaves a legacy of love, kindness, grace, tenacity and beauty through her dedication to art and painting, passion for tango, love of gardening, friendships and her beloved family.

Margie was a valued and inspirational member of her cherished Salt Spring Island community for over 50 years. Margie moved to the Island as a teacher in 1968 with then-husband Jon. After adventures to Australia, they made their permanent home on Salt Spring in 1975. At 42 Margie went back to school to study at the Victoria College of Art. A seamstress, choir member, Kindergarten teacher, tango teacher and dancer, founder and member of many groups, avid rose gardener, supporter of the arts, great friend to so many, and amazing mum and Nana; Margie embraced life and all it had to offer.

Margie is survived by her daughters Kirra and Arika; sons-in-law Bruce and Cecil; grandsons Dylan, Kai and Ronan; and sisters Mimi and Liz.

A celebration of life will be held the last weekend of July on Salt Spring.

“Tell me, what is it you will plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver

From: Leslie Corry
Relation: Friend in music, dance and art

Margie and I met on salt spring first at choir, then we danced and shared much at the tango group shortly after it was formed, then we shared so many discussions in the art community. Her demeanour was always warm, open, engaging and very well composed. Margie had such a light in her, you wanted to engage. I loved how she brought colour, beauty and artistry into everything she touched. And she liked a good laugh! My deepest condolences to the family. It is a very sad loss for our community.

From: Rochelle Janewski (nee Rae)
Relation: Friend

Margie was my friend and always made time to listen and encourage me during a difficult time in my life. Her kindness and wisdom helped me light the way and find my path. I am grateful for our friendship and the tango memories we shared. Margie will live on in my heart and the memories of her and our times together will comfort me and bring me joy forever. Rest in peace dear friend.

From: Gail Sjuberg
Relation: Friend

I always loved my interactions with Margie, whether they came through our book club since 2015, an interview for the Driftwood about her artwork, or when we met on the street in Ganges. She always gave you her warmest smile, most honest thoughts in the immediate moment and a gentle hug, and was genuinely interested in what was going on in her friends’ lives. She expressed her love for her family so fully. Margie’s spirit will continue to spread warmth and beauty.
