John Peter van Tamelen,89, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, where he had lived aboard his boat, Moya, with his partner, Sara Miller, for over 20 years.
Born on November 19, 1936, in Consort, Alberta, John’s life was defined by curiosity, courage, and a deep love for exploration. His adventures took him across oceans and into the hearts of countless people he met along the way. A gifted storyteller, John captured his remarkable journeys in four published books, leaving behind a legacy of words that will continue to inspire.
He is survived by his son, Todd van Tamelen (Norine Pihowich), and his stepdaughter, Ereca Hassell (Peter Laughlin), and Granddaughter Colette Habel (Silas Rae), who will remember him for his wisdom, humour, and unshakable zest for life.
John’s life will be celebrated in the stories he told, the waters he sailed, and the lives he touched. In keeping with his adventurous spirit, no formal service will be held, but friends and family are encouraged to honour his memory in their own meaningful ways.
