Eddy Jang
January 21, 1934 - April 30, 2025
Tribute
Eddy Jang (Jang Soo Ping) slipped peacefully into the Hereafter on April 30th 2025.
Best friend, advisor and entertainer to his wife Jan for 60 years. He also leaves his children Simon and Sarah as well as members of the Goodman and Girard family’s along with many friends to mourn his loss.
He was born in Vancouver on January 21st,1934.
His family ran a market garden and when recompense for his labours was denied he left home at the age of 15.
He was unable to get employment at this age and for a time slept on the streets and made soup at cafes by mixing ketchup with hot water.
In spite of this difficult beginning he led an exemplary life. He joined the Canada Pacific Shipping Company where he trained to be a chef. The Princess Ships plied the Northern Vancouver Island to Seattle route. It was at this early age he took up smoking as cigarettes were so much cheaper in Seattle than B.C.
While he was taking time off in Victoria and at loose ends he was persuaded to come to work at The Harbour House Hotel so that Billy Eng could take a holiday. So at 18 his love affair with Salt Spring Island began.
Sadly he was diagnosed with TB and so was unable to take up full time employment. He was welcomed into the homes by the small population and was fed so many turkey dinners on special occasions that he never ate turkey again.
He variously was a chauffeur, drove the fire truck and ambulance, was a school janitor and helped Goody in the Mortuary.
When his health returned he became an apprentice to Lichfield Bowden in the building trade.
Salt Spring Island is blessed with many of his houses He bought and remodelled The Jam Factory and Telephone Exchange building on Hereford Avenue.thus saving this piece of Island History
As he began to take on fewer building projects he enjoyed working at Maracaibo Estates and among his problem solving duties he created a children’s playground.
The great outdoors was his Church. Many family holidays were camping affairs and the sites he vacated were always left in immaculate condition, with a pile of ready chopped firewood.
He became an accomplished kayaker and hiker backpacker and wonderful trips were enjoyed with his friend Brian
He was a gentle loving man mentor and friend to many spreading laughter wherever he went.
He will be sorely missed. In Lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre
Celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
