Tribute

Dennis Marshall 1947–2024

Dennis was a deeply kind man with a big heart that drew people to him. He was one of those old time Saltspring characters who moved to the island to live a life his way, which he did with quiet accomplishment and great joy. Dennis loved Saltspring – the beach walks, the beauty of the land, playing on the water in his armada of boats, driving it’s bumpy roads with a menagerie of cars and motorcycles….but mostly, Dennis loved visiting — visiting with the people he called friends.

Many of you will remember him as ‘the glass man’, who ran and owned S.S.I. Glass for 45 years. We thank you for welcoming us into your homes and trusting us with your glass.

In his 40s Dennis bought a beautiful piece of land with its creek, its springs, its pond and its trees. Here he built the house he’d always envisioned. We filled it with things beautiful and odd and made it our home. It was his favourite place to be.

Dennis always needed to be making things. He had a creative mind and a feel for line & design. Between this and his skills he made many wondrous creations that enriched the lives of those who knew him. He was always active in our community. In the 80s, he ran the soap box derby races down Rainbow Road. Later, he organized the vintage boat show in Ganges Harbour. Dennis built and installed the busking chair outside Apple Photo. He was a mainstay at car shows, Sea Capers and local events. And of course, Dennis lived for garage sales and coffee on Barb’s deck.

I feel so privileged to have shared our lives for the the last 25 years. We laughed, cried, argued, worked, played and weaved a life together. When he hugged me, I always knew I was home. I’ve never meet anyone like him. He was truly one of a kind. He was, and will be, the love of my life.

Thanks Dennis

Dennis leaves behind his three sons: Brett, Johan and Joshua. Also, Misha (the best dog ever) and me, Rainbow his wife (who loved him so very much). He will be missed by those who loved him and those he befriended.

So very sorry to hear about Dennis….such a shock. Although we didn’t get to see each other very much over the years, we are fondly remembering the visits we had to Richmond and Salt Spring Island. All of these moments are flashing back….they were such happy and crazy times! I will greatly miss my “cool” cousin, who I first met when I was 5 years old when He, Uncle Luke & Aunt Bessie drove in from Santa Ana California to my house in Montreal North. How cool was that! Remembering those good times now.

Our deepest condolences to Rainbow, Brett, Johan and Joshua.

Thank you, Jack and Sharon and Terry this is Joshua Marshall Dennis’s son. It would be great to see you. I just wanted to remind you all that Jonah and I had the best time as we were growing up when dad did buy that piece of land in 1991 when we 10 years old up until age 20 we built this magical Dreamhouse that he wanted, and the beams were from the old booth Canal bridge which we cleaned off the oily parts and reuse these super solid beams for the main supports in the house while building the house and running dad’s glass company with him it was a lot of work that Jonah and I both did at least five hours a day five days a week for 10 years straight we were constantly there for our father and our mother as well and grandparents that live just down the road currently in Victoria and I will try contacting you and for dad, you will be extremely for the things you’ve taught us through those years of building the house without electricity or water just a woodstove a Coleman lantern for at least three years and 600 foot long driveway at 126 quarry drive in Vesuvius
In that time, we also rescued Rocky raccoon where we built a fort for him on the deck and took him to the beach to have him enjoy his natural habitat after dad rescued the little baby newborn. We had experiences with his glass company, installing residential commercial and even making and installing stain glass windows Went onto glass fusing for 20 years now and I love it. It’s just really too bad how us twins got blocked out of his relationship after he met rainbow and we were not able to visit the house we built with our dad over 10,000 hours into a dream house that we all enjoyed very much but that’s when you marry or remarry Someone that is unique but as long as he was happy, I suppose she has not been pleasant to us at all, which is very sad and we asked for counseling, but they always refused. Never wanted to fix the problem, but I have moved on because there are extremely better things in life than to be stressed out Because stress will kill you
Love you, dad, but just wish you were there for us after meeting Rainbow warrior
