Tribute

David Arthur Scott Merrick (Scott) May 12, 1948 – October 21, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of David Arthur Scott Merrick, known affectionately to all as Scott, who left us peacefully shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at the age of 77.

Following a stroke and an inspiring, long-term battle with cancer, Scott passed away with his best friend, Julianna, at his side. Tragically, Scott’s beloved husband, Bruce Wallace, followed him into eternal rest just four days later, in the early hours of Saturday, October 25.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, on May 12, 1948, Scott was a man defined by his boundless creativity and joyful spirit. His professional life was dedicated to education in Vancouver, BC, where he served as a respected teacher, principal, and district superintendent with the Vancouver School District. Scott’s fun-loving attitude and innovative approach to leadership made him a cherished mentor and friend to countless colleagues.

After retiring, Scott truly blossomed when he and Bruce moved to Salt Spring Island. There, he became a pillar in the local Arts community, finally having the time to fully lean into creative endeavors. He passionately pursued his talents as a painter, author, radio personality, and thespian, enriching the lives of everyone around him.

Scott is lovingly remembered by his children: Matthew (Sarah), Nora (Jon), and Jocelyn (James); his beloved grandson, Lincoln; and his former wife, Marijke. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lenore.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Lady Minto Hospital, who provided exceptional care and countless moments of joy during his final, challenging months. We also wish to acknowledge the unwavering friendship of Julianna, Catherine, and Dawn, whose frequent visits provided deep comfort and engaging conversation.

We take solace in the fact that Scott and Bruce were eternally reunited within days of their passing. The family asks for privacy during this time of profound loss. We look back fondly on the 2023 Celebration of Life Scott hosted to uplift the friends and family who made his life so full. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lady Minto Hospital Foundation or ArtSpring.
