Tribute

A great many people are deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of longtime Salt Spring Island resident Bette Calkins. A dearly loved member of the community, Bette passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on July 11, at the age of 84. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Before she became a cherished friend to so many on Salt Spring, she was long term friend of ex husband David, a loving mother to Gillian (husband Jade) Blair (wife Jan) and Robert, her beloved sister Diana and niece Erin (Reece, Brinn). In later years, one of her greatest joys was becoming a grandmother to her five grandchildren, Hayden, Braxton, Ruby, Terra, and Dane, all of whom she adored.

Bette was truly unique—a kind, generous, and loyal friend, the sort of person anyone would be fortunate to know. She was an avid gardener and, in her own words, a “simple” cook. Yet she could always be counted on to arrive at a potluck with something delicious, even if she was running an hour late. Her friends affectionately nicknamed her “Bette Late Than Never,” a tribute she wore with good humour.

Bette leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, laughter, and community. She was deeply loved, and her absence will be felt by many.

A celebration of Bette’s life will take place at 12:30 on August 28, 2026 at Taurus Farm (across from the golf course), the property where she raised her family in the mid 1970s.
