Barbara Jean Lyngard (née Coopsie)
July 6, 1935 – June 9, 2025
Barbara Jean Lyngard passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, at Hospice House in the Cowichan Valley, with her daughters Danna and Pauline by her side.
Born in Fulford Harbour at her grandparent’s home, Clara and David Maxwell, Barbara was the third child of Inez Maxwell and William Coopsie. Barbara attended the one-room Beaver Point School and graduated from Salt Spring Island High School.
After high school, Barbara moved to Victoria with her family and attended Sprott Shaw Secretarial College. It was at a dance at the old Strathcona Hotel where she met her future husband, Donald “Jack” Lyngard through mutual friends and were married in 1956. She had a career as an Executive Assistant at Air Services and the Provincial Government and later worked at BC Systems.
Barbara and Jack shared a love of camping, boating, and hosting family gatherings. Over the years, Barbara lived in several coastal communities across British Columbia and briefly in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, while Jack served in the Royal Canadian Navy.
She is predeceased by grandparents Clara and David Maxwell, parents Inez and Bill Coopsie, sister Margaret Coopsie, brother Bill Coopsie, and nephew Eric.
Barbara is lovingly remembered by her daughters Danna (Jim) and Pauline (Darren), her grandsons Daniel, David, Kyle, and Michael, their partners, seven great-grandchildren, and nephews David, Steven, and Alan Coopsie.
Barbara’s legacy of love, resilience, and family devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family want to thank the staff who cared for Barbara at Cowichan Hospice. A private family celebration of life will take place in spring 2026. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Salt Spring Archives Salt Spring Island Archives or Cowichan Hospice Contact – Cowichan Hospice in her memory.
